8 Mistakes Blockchain Projects are Making on Twitter (and 5 Tips to Fix it)

Whether you like it or not, Twitter is the face of your company, especially in the blockchain market. When I find out about a new project, the first thing I check is Twitter so I can find out more about the project. Who are they, who are their users, what do they do?

Over the past year, the team at EventLinker has helped many blockchain projects to improve their Twitter feed, growing engagement and reach by an average of 2x!

Here are some of the simple mistakes we have noticed in the blockchain space:

Language – When tweeting, there is some lenience given in terms of the language. 140 characters doesnt allow for a well-developed post, but people should be able to clearly understand what you are trying to say! Find the best English speaker in the office and let them be in charge of the Twitter posts.

Visual Content – Posts on Twitter should fit in the feed. Graphic designers: 2:1 Images! Dont try to post a long poster on Twitter! Also, dont try to write a paragraph on an image and post it on Twitter. If you have a lot of words that need to be expressed, link to a blog post on Medium, or even better, on your website! Click-through rate, baby!

Brand Identity – Your project should have a very clear identity. Colours, fonts and logos should be established, and all of your outbound content should follow the brand guide. I bet you can imagine in your mind what a post from Binance looks like. Binance has amazing brand recognition, because of their clear brand identity. Is Binance the best cryptocurrency exchange in the world? Probably not, but their clean and well-developed brand identity is certainly helping to give that impression.

In-Depth Content – General blockchain market news is great, but to be really effective on social media your brand should become a thought leader in the industry. Share long blog posts about a part of the industry that you think needs addressing or improving! Show that your project is more than just a logo and a website, but a group of experts that are trying to bring a product or service to a complex market.

Fake Followers – Youre a Twitter account with 10,000 followers and no one likes you tweets? Oh dear. Its very obvious that you bought followers, and its a bad look. It is better to have less followers and a higher engagement rate that high followers and no engagement.

#Hashtags and Emojis – Use Hashtags and Emojis, but you dont need to #hashtag #every #word! Emojis are eye-candy, and great for grabbing attention, but like all sweet things they should be consumed sparingly. Please, dont make a #companynameXX hashtag, no one is searching for that!

Automated Posts – No one cares who your top followers are this week. Show your human side.

User Interaction – Twitter gives you instant, public access to all of your users and potential users. If someone asks a question or has an issue and posts the issue via Twitter, this is a great opportunity to publicly respond. It shows to the user, their audience and your audience that you are professional. Use every opportunity on Twitter to interact directly with your users. Its free promotion!

There are quite a few things that are done poorly on Twitter. What are some simple things you can implement to make your Twitter more successful?

Visual Content – When creating visual content for our clients, we always use Canva! Canva makes it simple to create great-looking designs for social media. All you need to do is input your companies logos and colours, then drag and drop graphics and other content. Canva will even tell you what size the content should be for each social media platform! Videos – 15 second (or less) videos have 10x more engagement than regular tweets! If your video has sound, add some captions for users that are not able to listen! Some great platforms for creating simple videos are Canva and Biteable. Whilst not free, the return on investment from having video content for Twitter (and other platforms) is huge.

GIFs – Don’t have time to make a short video? Twitter has a huge collection of GIFs that you can post. Posts with GIFs have a 55% higher engagement rate than regular tweets.

Analytics – Twitter has a powerful analytics tool built into the platform, and it’s free! Mess around and find the best time to post for your audience. For US audiences, this is normally between noon and 10 pm local time. Your audience may be located in other places, so find out who your audience is and adjust posting times to suit.

Read the Twitter Reports – Twitter creates great reports every few months on the latest data about the whole Twitter Platform. All of the data from above has been taken from the Twitter Agency Playbook. Learn from the experts at Twitter about trends, tips and other ideas to improve your Twitter feed. They built the platform, they have some great ideas!
